Working Series Title: "Beginnings"
I really liked the idea of constructing this piece from dead and dried botanicals. I began collecting leaves, flowers, and natural items that had fallen on the sidewalk near my home in Fall 2020. The material held its color longer than I expected and I was drawn to how delicate and yet strong each leaf became over time. I cut a lace-like pattern into the largest leaf and added small leaves and dried blooms to give a softness (and color!) to the piece. I often associate the transition from Fall to Winter as death, but here, I find death to flourish and be beautiful. I constructed the headpiece loosely referencing a birdcage veil.
I photographed the veil indoors in the evening creating warm, heavy, and dense images. I wanted the veil to be a physical barrier between my myself, as the model, and the viewer. I also wanted it to filter the light and create shadows as an additional veil.
I wanted more separation in the tones of colors, so I reshot the images in film -- this time outside. I'm exploring the duality between light and shadow, soft and strong, hidden and exposed, seen and unseen and how I carry both these traits within myself. The two sets of images feel light night and day and perhaps that's the point.
